Abstract

The development of tourism in Indonesia, especially rural tourism as part of a sustainable tourism, has an impact on the development of tourism village. Adaptation is rural communities’s respon in tourism village. Brayut tourism village is one of the villages that rely on traditional dwelling as main attraction of cultural tourism. Changes in dwelling as a form of adaptation is a simple community response. This research uses case study method to see the unique of Brayut, followed by research participation action research techniques to gather information from communities in utilizing traditional dwelling. Adaptive space may have negative impact if feature to economic improvement that ignores the value of tradition as the "spirit" of the traditional area. Adaptive space can have positive impact if it had an impact not only to increase revenue but also to maintain cultural heritage assets. In Brayut tourism village, community participation based tourism, is one factor that determining the success of the preservation of traditional buildings. This study reviewed conservation of traditional dwelling as a cultural heritage through adaptive space as tourist attraction. The result is types of adaptation in the traditional dwelling as strategy to preserve cultural heritage in rural tourism based on traditional culture.
