Abstract

In this global era, there is an interesting phenomenon in giving names to Javanese kids. Typical Javanese names such as Joko, Sutrisno and Sumini are no longer used. The names have been replaced by such names as Evan, Andreas, Daffa, or Nasya. The number of words in those new names may consist of more than two words. Regarding the phenomenon, it is getting more difficult for people to identify the social status of the children, especially those of their parents. The objective of this research is to describe the relationship between the names of Javanese kids and the social status of their parents. Therefore, it can be expected if the previously used theories are still relevant with the current condition. To reach the objective, the research was based on an in depth review of culture and language. Data of the research were collected from the names of the students of “Bintang Kecil” Play Group of Kelurahan Sumurboto, Kecamatan Banyumanik, Semarang City, in the academic year of 2013/2014. The samples were expected to provide an actual illustration about the naming of Javanese kids. A purposive sampling method was used to collect the sample. A set of interviews were taken to analyze the sample. This consisted of in depth interviews and recordings. The analysis provided the following conclusions:1. Javanese personal names consist of a group of words, 2. Generally, the names use several words from different languages. 3. The names do not reflect the social (educational and occupational) status of the parents. The results are expected to be useful as a basis to make policies concerning with the conservation of Javanese culture as parts of the Indonesian cultures.
