Abstract

While in elementary school, students are exposed to the knowledge of grammar since Year One until year six. Aspects of the grammar taught in schools include morphology, syntax and semantics. Students need to apply their knowledge of grammar in essay writing. This study analyzes the grammatical errors in essays written by Year Five students of one rural school. 15 students from a good class and 15 from an average class were selected for the study. Each student was asked to write an essay based on a picture given by their teacher. Results of the analysis show that students make mistakes in verb phrase, prepositional phrase, noun phrase, spelling and sentence. The findings also demonstrate that the language proficiency level of the Year Five sudents is rather modest
