Abstract

Chronologically, Sundanese dances can be divided into traditional and modern dances. Traditional dances generally depict life, nature, animals and human traits. Dances are not merely a form of entertainment. They also signify the cultural identity of a group of people. There are a wide range of movements in Sundanese dances. Each movement has its specific name and the names of all the movements in Sundancese dances form a lexicon. For example, the term ajeg denotes steady, constant, udar off, and langkah step. Not only do the terms have aesthetic meanings, but they also have philosophical meanings for Sundanese people. The research aims to describe the types of lexicons in Sundanese traditional dances, their philosophical values, and the socio-cultural representation of Sundanese traditional dances. The data, the Sundanese traditional dance lexicon, are collected by means of literary study and interview, as well as observation and are analyzed based on Riley’s theory of ethnolingustics (2008). The analysis results in descriptions of the types, meanings, aesthetic and philosophical values of the Sundanese traditional dance lexicon, as well as the sociocultural representation of the lexicon from an ethnolinguistic perspective.
