Abstract

Politeness in language has been the core foundation over generations. People do not solely value othersbased on the external beauty; the appealing inner qualities are of importance as well. Being courteousexemplifies one’s pure heart in the forms of polite and inoffensive behaviour and language. Were thelanguage use impolite, the community would have certainly branded the speaker negatively as a person withno courtesy, immoral and not upholding cultural values. Evidently, this does include the undergraduates,which are often seen as knowledgeable and among the intellectuals. Therefore the present paper aims toexamine the language use by the undergraduates vis-à-vis commands. The research orientation is ofdescriptive analysis. Commands will be further classified into four main components: very subtle, subtle,less subtle and harsh. It is hoped that the polite language use may bring forth their identity and personalityas future leaders in steering the nation away from conflicts.
