Abstract

Language as a social dimension of culture leads the interaction between an unique users. Preservation of a language becomes important when the imbalance in language uses is happened, especially in families that are formed by different ethnic individuals. Therefore, this research aimed to identify the preservation of Sundanese language in Multi-ethnic families in Sawarna Village, Bayah sub-district, Lebak Regency. The instrument used in this research is an interview package called “Basa Urang” compiled by Cohn et.al (2013). This research showed the variation of language code in multi-etchnic families is Sunda-Javanese dialect used in casual variety, intimate variety, and beautiful variety. Furthermore, the sociocultural factors also affect the preservation of Sundanese language in multi-ethnic families, consisting of the loyalty of the speakers, the concentration of settlements, inheritance, and education.
