Abstract

In this paper I will try to describe the kinship terms in two languages. Indonesian and Russian are two languages that are not related genealogically and geographically but in both languages, there are some similarities, as well as differences. Kinship terms found in these two languages are classified based onbiologic and nonbiologic relationship, and relationships by marriage. Data obtained from the dictionary terms both languages, namely the Russian General Dictionary compiled by Kuznetsov and General Indonesian Dictionary compiled by Badudu and Zain. From the data obtained there are a number ofasymmetrical terms in both languages. For examples there are 4 (four) terms in Russian and only 1 (one) term in Indonesian to indicate a relationship based on marriage. The existence of asymmetric and lacunae showed that every nation with its language has a specific cultural significance. The description about kinship terms is very useful in describing the concept of the family in both nations as the main concept for a larger study. Verbalization kinship through kinship terms indicate how they view the world around them. Russian language tends to be more detailed in describing the relationships within the family as compared to Indonesian. However, there are efforts to simplify these terms in Russian, while there is a tendency of extension in Indonesian term to provide additional information.
