Abstract

In 2010, the incident of mental retardation in the world was about 15% of world’s population, including 5% of children. Mentally retarded children experienced a limitation and different development so that they needed a mother who can take care of them well. Mother needs family social support and self-efficacy in taking care the children in order to control mother’s parenting stress. The objective of this study was to know the relationship of family social support and self-efficacy with parenting stress on mother who has mentally retarded child in SLB Negeri Semarang. This study was a quantitative study with descriptive correlation method. Research design used in this study was cross sectional approach. The sampling technique was purposive sampling in which 100 respondents were taken as the sample of this study. The result of this study showed that 54% of respondents had moderate family social support, 50% of respondents had high self-efficacy, and 47% of respondents had low parenting stress. The result of Chi-Square test was obtained p-value 0,000 (p<0,05) means that there was significant relationship between family social support and parenting stress, and p-value 0,000 (p<0,05) means that there was significant relationship between self-efficacy and parenting stress on mother who had mentally retarded child in SLB Negeri Semarang. Suggestion of this study is referred to the respondents to increase closer relationship with their family, increase their self-efficacy, and could control their parenting stress.
