KEBUTUHAN CAREGIVER DALAM MERAWAT LANSIA DENGAN DEMENSIA DI PANTI WREDHA KOTA SEMARANG

Abstract

The caregiver needs knowledge and skills to provide optimal care. This study aims to determine the needs of the caregiver in taking care of the elderly with dementia in Nursing Home. This research was descriptive quantitative using survey approach. This study used total sampling technique with the total 40 respondents. The results of the study show that the most required knowledge needs are the signs of self-stress (97.5%), knowing about dementia (95%), and knowing about safe exercise for the elderly with dementia (95%). The most required skills needs are how to communicate with the elderly with dementia (100%), performing better ways in expressing guilt for the caregiver (100%), facilitating meals for the elderly (97.5%) and strategies for dealing with difficult behaviour: wandering (97.5%). The conclusion of this study is there have been identified various knowledge and skills required by the caregiver to treat the elderly with dementia. The caregiver is expected to identify other types of needs that are necessary in treating the elderly with dementia.
