Abstract
Elderly with dementia has many needs, including the basic ones that should be assisted by caregivers for the fulfilment. This study aimed to determine the fulfilment of basic needs of the elderly with dementia in the House of Social Services for Elderly in Pucang Gading Semarang. This is a descriptive quantitative research with survey approach. This study uses total sampling technique with 34 people as the respondents. The result showed that the most met need were the need of residence (91.2%) on physiological needs; the needs of hygiene skin (82.4%) on the safety and security needs; the need for affection (79.4%) on the love and belonging needs; the need of being recognized by others (79.4%) on the self-esteem needs; and the need of self-acceptance (85.3%) on the self-actualization needs. Meanwhile, the most unmet needs were the need for fluid (70.6%) on the physiological needs; the need for interaction (85.3%) on the safety and security needs; the need of role (79.4%) on the love and belonging needs; the need of being rewarded (67.6%) on the self-esteem needs; and the need of self-recognition (79.6%) on the self-actualization needs. The conclusion is that most of the basic needs (>50%) of the elderly with dementia are not yet met by the caregivers. They are expected to improve the fulfilment of the unmet needs and maintain the met ones. Keywords : Needs, elderly, dementia Bibliography : 100 (1997-2016)
