Abstract

Increasing safety medication is a component of patient’s safety which are lots enough of medication error incident is occurred. Medication error can be preventable by implementing the correct principle in medication treatment. Emergency department is an initial gateway of hospital admission and has a high risk of medication error. This study aimed to identify the provision of medication in the emergency department of Semarang Regional of Public Hospital. This quantitative research was using descriptive cross-sectional study method. This research was using observation sheet developed by the researcher and its validity and reliability had been tested. The research used purposive quota sampling involving 352 medication events. The results from the research showed most of nurses (178, 55.8%) and most of the students (84 respondents, 71.8%) were good at giving medicine. The principle which had good implementing by nurses includes the right route (235 respondents, 100%) and the right documentation (235, 100%) while the principle that had good implementing by students was the explanation of medication procedure (117, 100%). The implementing right patient principle was not so good by nurses (228 nurses, 97,2%) while the application of right documentation principle (117, 100%) and checking medication therapy program (117, 100%) was not good enough by all of the students. The results of the research concluded that medication treatment in Emergency Department of Semarang Regional Public Hospital is good because majority of nurses and students do medication well. Suggestions to hospital are to conduct training on medicine pharmacology and identification of patient for improvement the medication.
