Abstract

Fluid restriction is one of the important things in the success of hemodialysis implementation. Disobedience to the fluid restriction in hemodialysis patients reached 30-70%. This study aimed to determine the effect of fluid monitoring through fluid restriction application on the retriction adherence of hemodialysis patients. This research was a quasi-experiment with pre and post test nonequivalent control group design. The samples in the control and intervention groups were taken by purposive sampling with 18 participants in each group. The intervention was given through guiding method, supporting, providing environment, and teaching. Intervention was carried out with the frequency of twice a week for 5 weeks and 15 minutes in every meeting. The result showed that average respondents were middle adulthood and had hemodialysis for more than 3 years. Before the treatment, 61 % participants in intervention group had sufficient level of adherence and 22 % had a good good level of adherence. After the treatment, 44 % of participans had a good level of adherence and 39 % had a sufficient level of adherence. There was mean value difference of intradialitic weight gain between control and intervention group (p value = 0,03) and there was also mean value difference of intradialitic weight before and after the treatment in intervention group (p value = 0,00). Hemodialysis patients had the ability to perform self-care, especially in fluids intake. This research concluded that there was an effect of using fluid restriction application on the fluid restriction adherence in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Nurses can use the supportive educative nursing system to assist patients in monitoring the fluids with a smart phone help.
