Abstract

The high demand towards role and function as a nurse can potentially lead to burnout which causes patients to have secondary infections that are not caused by the disease, and decreases patient’s satisfaction and quality of care as well as mortality. The effort which can be done to decrease the nurse's burnout is through the implementation of effective leadership style. Caring leadership as a leadership style can facilitate the nurse's needs so that it will improve performance and work satisfaction. The purpose of this study to was know the influence of head nurse’s caring leadership towards nurse’s burnout. The research method was pre-post-test quasi-experimental design with a control group. The samples were 46 nurses recruited by using purposive sampling. The data were collected using questionnaire about nurse’s burnout and caring leadership observation sheet, and then analyzed using pairred t-test. The research result showed the difference in the mean value of burnout before and after the implementation of caring leadership with a p-value = 0,001, which meant there was influence of head nurse’s caring leadership towards nurse’s burnout. Caring leadership can be used an effort to decrease nurse’s burnout. The implementation of caring leadership should be done consistently in all nursing activities at the hospital, giving that caring leadership can decrease nurse’s burnout that will finally have an impact on the quality of nursing services.
