Abstract
Kata kunci : Ammonium, Nitrifikasi, Nitrit, Nitrat, fixed bed reactor, suspended growth reactor ABSTRACT [A Study of the Fixed Bed and Suspended Growth Reactors in Removing High Concentration of Ammonium]. Ammonium is a primary form of dissemination of nitrogen pollutants in water bodies that can increase the oxygen demands and cause eutrophication in the water ecosystem. The existence of ammonium in wastewater is one of the serious problems for the environment which can be toxic to the ecosystem. Wastewater treatment technology for ammonium removal is widely varied, this study investigated the process of ammonium removal using attached and suspended principles. Fixed Bed Reactor and Suspended Growth Reactor are used in this study, with the same Hidraulic Retention Time is 4 hours to determine which reactor with better efficiency in removing ammonium compounds by monitoring on the nitrification process parameters that are ammonium, nitrite, nitrate and pH. Suspended Growth Reactors showed more stable ammonium removal in the batch system, while its efficiency showed smaller value which is 14.69% and 14.93% for Fixed Bed Reactors. Furthermore, in the continuous system, Fixed Bed Reactor showed better result on the efficiency of ammonium removal than Suspended Growth Reactor. Its efficiency decreased while increasing the ammonium concentration of substrate. NaHCO3 ratio has significant effect on the nitrification process, the bacteria needs Carbon element and the environmental condition with optimum pH (8.0 to 8.5). Keywords: Ammonium, Nitrification, Nitrite, Nitrate, fixed bed reactor, suspended growth reactor
