PEMERTAHANAN BAHASA BATAK DALAM IKATAN MAHASISWA SUMATERA UTARA (KajianSosiolinguistik)

Abstract

This research is motivated by the symptom of mother language extinction which happened in some area. As one of the objects of sociolinguistic studies, language preservation is a very interesting material to study. Language defense is closely related to the prestige or pride of a language in the eyes of its users. Based on this background, researchers are interested in conducting research on the form and cause of Batak language maintenance in the IMSU (Ikatan Mahasiswa Sumatera Utara) at Diponegoro University. The purpose of this study is to describe the reasons for the choice of language in communication in the campus and community, analyze the form of languagemaintenance in the campus and community communication and Analyze the impact of language maintenance for the environment and the community of the destination. This research type is quantitative research by using sociolinguistics approach. Data collection in this study using questionnaires distributed to 60 respondents by using random sampling technique. The data in this study were analyzed by descriptive statistical analysis. The results showed that the condition of Batak language maintenance in the IMSU community is still good. The use of Batak language in the IMSU community still gets a high percentage in most domains, that is the family domain (80.00 percent), community domain (61.67 percent), neighborhood (68.33 percent), Worship (56.10 percent) and social environment in Semarang city (55.00 percent). This is due to loyalty factor to discuss his mother (46.67 percent). Batak language maintenance carried out by IMSU members does not bring negative impacts on society in the city of Semarang. This is because members of IMSU can put themselves well, so they understand the right situation to use Batak language. Keywords: Sociolinguistics, maintenance, Batak language, IMSU community.
