Abstract

The limitation use of many local languages put them only in a spoken variety. This positions them in a risky edge, hanging on a thread of the speakers’ loyalty and of the speakers’ existence. Their repertoire can change instantly as their users adapt to a social interaction and assimilation. We know for example the expression like “dandan” (meaning “make up”-Javanese), turns into “berias” (Indonesian counterpart) and today we are more familiar to hear “make up” (the English)—particularly among the teenagers and the middle and educated class of society. Another more dangerous risk is the tendency and the preference of their speakers to communicate in another code, a different, usually-more-dominating, language (s). If the tendency keeps steady and goes on, it is possible that the local languages will be endangered. To cope with the part of the big problems is by making use what the past generation has left. It can be written or spoken recording containing the language pieces which were commonly used by the deceased generation. Besides, such recording also keeps other socio-cultural facts in the past. One of such spoken recording is the audio humor drama of Peang-Penjol, a comedian group of Banyumas dialect native. The group lived in the beginning of 80s to the mid of 90s. The humor used the Banyumas dialect at the time, and made a record of language facts in the past. The cultural pieces contain the dialect’s vocabulary and expressions which are hardly heard in today’s communication. They also can be a model to preserve the cultural and lingual properties of a community. The local stakeholders and government can promote the effort by supporting the compilation of the recording and the revitalization of the neo-local groups making use of the local dialects and cultures as the materials.
