Abstract

Nurses are health workers who have important role in caring and rehabilitating people with mental illness. Nurses’ attitudes towards mental illness become the main determinant of quality and the outcomes of caring. Nursing students are postulant nurses who will provide nursing care to people with mental illness. The purpose of this study was to examine the nursing students’ attitudes towards mental illness. This study was a descriptive study with survey approach. The sampling technique in this study used purposive sampling with total sample of 209 nursing students in Department of Nursing Science Diponegoro University. Data was collected using a CAMI Questionnaire and analyzed by a descriptive statistic. The results of this study showed that 63.6% of respondents were pro on the Authoritarian subscale and 56.9% of respondents were pro on the Social Restrictiveness subscale. On the other hand, the Benevolence and Community Mental Health Ideology subscale, both had pro attitudes as much as 56.0% of respondents. In conclusion, nursing students had a diverse attitudes both positive and negative attitudes toward mental illness. Education can be one of the intervention strategy to reduce negative attitudes and increase positive attitudes towards mental illness. Keywords : attitude, nursing student, mental illness
