Abstract

ABSTRACT Putri, Amelia Anindya. 2017. “Symbol and Meaning in Aman Kimiko's Short Story Shiroi Boushi.”A thesis of Japanese Department, Diponegoro University. Advisor: Yuliani Rahmah, S.Pd.,M.Hum. The object of this study is a short story entitled Shiroi Boushi. The method of data collection is library research. This study uses theory of semiotic by Pierce and hermeneutic reading by Riffatere which used to find symbols and explain their meaning. The results showed that there are 6 symbols. The symbols are: mandarin orange, leaf clover, white butterfly, dandelion, soap bubbles, and ShiroiBoushi. Mandarin oranges and leaf clover is a symbol of good luck. White butterfly is a symbol of the spirit of someone who has died. Dandelion flower is a symbol of the spirit house. Soap bubble is a symbol of hope and prayer. Shiroi Boushi is a symbol of someone's sister who had died. Keywords: Shiroi Boushi, symbol, meaning.
