Abstract

ABSTRACT Kusumastuti, Purnaning Siwi. 2017. “Technical Analysis on Magical Illustration on Ponyo and The Little Mermaid (A Comparative Study). Thesis, Bachelor of Japanese Literature, Diponegoro University, Semarang. Advisor Yuliani Rahmah, S.Pd., M.Hum. This study is emphasizing on magical illustration in Ponyo and The Little Mermaid. This study is aiming for revealing the magical illustration and for explain the similarity and the differences between the two animes. The data used in this thesis is Studio Ghibli’s Ponyo and Walt Disney’s The Little Mermaid. The data was analyzed using a magic realism theory and a comparative literature theory. The comparative literature theory is used to compare the story topic, setting illustration, and the characters illustration told in the movies, and the magical realism illustration that includes the light and glow usage and hand gestures usage. The outcome of this study are, the two animes have similarities and differences on the story topic, both major and minor story topic, setting illustration, character illustration, also light and glow illustration that includes the origin of the light and the different colour usage, and hand gestures usage. The hand gestures usage include placing hands upside down, swinging the sticks, swinging hand, and flicking the hand.
