Abstract

ABSTRACT Nuha Azizah, 2017. “The Politeness of Imperative Utterances in ‘Arslan Senki’ comic,” Skripsi, Japanese Literature, University of Diponegoro, Semarang. Advisor: Maharani Patria Ratna, SS, M.Hum. The object of this study was a comic which titled Arslan Senki written by a comic writer, Hiromu Arakawa and a novelist, Yoshiki Tanaka. The method used to obtain the data was literature study. The theory which supported this study was Principal Politeness (PP) theory by Geoffrey Leech. The objectives of this study were: 1. To know what are the meanings of imperative utterances contained in Arslan Senki comic. 2. To describe the real forms of imperative utterances contained in Arslan Senki comic. The sample used in this study was the imperative utterances uttered by a lower social status characters to a higher social status characters in Arslan Senki comic volume 1 until 4. Based on the analysis result, it can be known that there are 5 meanings of imperative utterances which uttered by the lower social status character to the higher status character, which are: imperative meaning, request meaning, invitation/offer meaning, asking permission meaning, and forbidden meaning. Whereas, there are 3 types of imperative utterances related to the principle of politeness, which are: the politeness of imperative utterances adhere one maxim, the politeness of imperative utterances break one maxim, and the politeness of imperative utterances which has more than one maxim.
