A thesis in partial fulfillment of the requirement for S-I Degree Japanese Department, Faculty of Humanities, Diponegoro University, Semarang. First Advisor Drs. Redyanto Noor, M.Hum. Second Advisor Budi Mulyadi, S.Pd, M.Hum. This research aims to finding and explaining about the structural elements in the short story "The Silence" and how the personality structure Ozawa’s character in the short story "The Silence" by Haruki Murakami is based on the structural theory of personality by Sigmund Freud. The method which used in this research is the method through technical literature refer to read. The theory used in this research is the structural theory of fiction and psychoanalytic theory of structure of personality according to Sigmund Freud. The results showed that the ego of Ozawa can fulfill the id. However, the superego has not worked perfectly on hisself. But the the moral values that he received from the surrounding environment can play a role in controlling the desire of his id.
