Gambaran Pengetahuan dan Perilaku Perawat dalam Upaya Pencegahan Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP) di Rumah Sakit dr. Moewardi Surakarta

Abstract

Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP) is a nosocomial infection that frequently occurs in patients with mechanical ventilator in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The incidence of VAP can increase the length of care term, the risk of death, and the cost of hospitalization. This study aimed to describe the nurses’ knowledge and behaviors in the preventive actions of VAP in intubated patients in the ICU of dr. Moewardi hospital, Surakarta. This study used a descriptive design with survey method. A total sampling of 30 respondents were recruited. The data were collected by using questionnaires and analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The results indicated that 21 respondents (70%) had good level of knowledge, and 17 respondents (56.7%) showed good behaviors. Regarding the rank of sub-variables of nurses’ behaviors, hand washing showed the highest level with mean of 5.0. The study concluded that the nurses had good level of knowledge and behaviors in the preventive actions of VAP. It is expected that this study could be a further consideration for the hospital management to create a regulation on the preventive actions of VAP (VAP bundles), and an evaluation for the nurses to improve their knowledge in the prevention of VAP.
