Abstract

The understanding of drugs for patients is very important and can be promoted by the provision of drug information from the healthcare providers. The provision of medication is one of the principles in the administration of drugs to patients. This study aimed to gain a description of the provision of medication information to patients in Dr. Kariadi Public Central Hospital, Semarang. This study employed a quantitative design with a descriptive approach and involved 279 patients in the inpatient wards. A univariate descriptive analysis was used and shown in the form of frequency distribution tables. The results showed that the majority of respondents had received medication information properly. It was evident from the fact that most respondents were well informed about the benefits of drugs as many as 252 (90.3%), the time of drug administration as many as 240 (86.4%), the mode of drug administration as many as 228 (81%), and the side effects of drugs as many as 201 respondents (72%). On the other hand, some patients had not received medication information well, especially regarding the dose of drugs as many as 30 (10.8%), side effects of drugs as many as 35 (12.45%) and further action to do in response to the drug side effects as many as 26 respondents (9.3%). The study recommends the healthcare providers to give medication information more optimally to the patients and families, especially about the side effects and mode of drug administration through a standard operating procedure.
