Abstract
Department of Nursing Faculty of Medicine Diponegoro University January 2017 ABSTRACT Susi Septyati Ningsih*) "Experience A Family Of Critical Patients Hospitalization in ICU Room Dr Kariadi Hospital Semarang" xiv + 69 pages + 3 pictures + 2 tables + 9 attachments Critical patients are those who suffer from critical condition which causes changes in physiological, psychosocial, developmental, and spiritual. Critically ill patients who require hospitalization will have the role of the family as a supporting system. The role of families facing critical patients can lead to physical effects such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, and health problems. Psychological effects such as anxiety, fear, sadness and depression and social impacts such as reduced communication and social isolation. The purpose of this study was to determine the family's experience in dealing with hospitalization of critically ill patients in ICU, Dr Kariadi Hospital Semarang. This study was a qualitative research with phenomenological approach. The sample in this study involved 6 participants to who were the nuclear family of the patients, 18 years old above and had been waiting in the ICU for more than 7 days. Data collection techniques with in-depth interviews. The results of the study were physical effects, ie fatigue, bodily complaints and sleep disturbances; psychological effects such as anxiety, tension, fear, sadness, empathy, and stress; social impact, which was a new experience, communication is reduced; and the actions of the family, positive coping and surrender. In conclusion, there were two themes, namely the impact of waiting for critically ill patients in the ICU for family and family coping when faced with critical patients in ICU. Suggestions for future studies should provide advice regarding the impact of interventions that arise when families face critical patients.
