Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding is one of many ways that influences an optimal growth and development for the babies. However, some mothers could not do so. The factors that influence them are work, insufficient milk supply, the physical condition of mother who cannot give their breastmilk. In the end they use formula milk as substitute for breastmilk. This study aimed to know the mothers’ experience in giving the breastmilk substitution for their babies. This research was qualitative study which involved 6 participants selected based on purposive sampling technique. The data were colected using in-depth interviews. The result of this research showed 5 related themes which included the mothers’ perceptions about breastmilk substitution, mothers’ emotional responses of not giving their breastmilk, how breastmilk substitutes were prepared, mothers’ reasons for breastmilk substitute, and problems that occurs when mothers’ give breastmilk substitute. The conclusion of this research showed that mothers’ behaviors in giving breastmilk substitutes are related to their knowledge and experience in deciding to used breastmilk substitutes. Nurse is expected to give health education about lactation and exclusive breastfeeding to reduce the rates of giving breastmilk substitutes for the babies.
