Abstract

Mothers having children with disorders experience stress at higher level compared to mothers with normal children. Mothers having low birth weight babies in hospitals put all the focus on their babies and feel worried if their babies get worsened. During the period, mothers experiencing stress will try to perform strategies to cope with the problem. The research was aimed to determine the stress level and coping strategy used by mothers having low birth weight babies in Semarang. It was a non-experimental quantitative research, descriptive observational research design, and based on cross sectional approach. Stress level data were collected using Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) 42 questionnaire and coping strategy data was collected using The Brief Cope questionnaire. Sample was taken using Consecutive Sampling, resulted in 33 respondents of mothers having low birth weight babies in RSUD Tugurejo and RSUD Semarang. The result shows that 45,5 % respondents experiencing normal stress level; 24,3% respondents experiencing light stress; 21,2% respondents experiencing moderate stress and 9% respondents experiencing severe stress. A lot of respondents apply emotion-focused coping with mean 2,5 and the highest coping sub-scale is religion, showing the value as much as 6,4. When giving maternity nursing care, nurses should analyze the psychological condition of mothers having low birth weight babies especially on stress level and coping strategy. Nurses should also educate mothers and her family to reduce the stress level.
