Abstract
ABSTRACT One of the indicators of the service quality in the implementation of patient safety programs is the incidence of patient falls. Patient falls often occur in hospitals, which can cause the physical and psychological injuries and even the death of the patients. Implementing the fall prevention programs becomes the concrete actions of the hospital to evaluate the risks of patient falls and reduce the incidence. The purpose of this study was to describe the implementation of fall prevention by the hospital nurses. This study employed a descriptive design with a survey approach and was conducted in a public hospital in Semarang. The samples were 277 nurses who were recruited using the proportional random sampling. The data were collected through the questionnaires and analyzed using the descriptive statistics. The results showed that the implementation of fall prevention by the nurses had been properly carried out (84.5%). The highest level of the sub variable of the fall implementation was the documentation with a value of 3,00 ± 0,04, and the lowest was the marking of risks of falls with a value of 3,00 ± 0,04. The preventive actions which were always carried out by the nurses included calculating the score of new patients admitted to the room/unit, advising the patients to ask for help, and documenting the time and interventions which have been performed. Meanwhile, the actions which were rarely done included marking on the door the patients room when the patient occupied the room alone and ensuring that the trousers or sarong were worn above the ankle of the patients. Based on the findings, it is recommended that the hospital uses a comprehensive assessment of the fall risks to identify the modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors. Keywords: fall, the risk of falls, fall prevention
