Abstract

Ketapang Village, precisely in Susukan subdistrict, has been a village which has high potential to develop organic farming. The development points to the likelihood that welfare might be imporoved. However, a couple of problems might be faced by the farmers. It comprises of: agricultural land, nature, society, and science technology. Aims of this study were: (i) to analyze the conditions of geographical, economic, and social cultural; (ii) to explain the agricultural land, nature, society, and science technology in organic rice farming; (iii) to explain the role of social capital in overcoming the problems of organic rice farming; and (iv) to construct an economic model based on organic agricultural institutional of social capital. Qualitative approach is employed to explore the study The data is used in this research was primary and secondary data. The primary data was obtained through interviews, documentation, and observation of organic rice farming and social capital in Ketapang Village. The secondary data was obtained through documents related to the organic rice farming, institutional economics, and social capital, such as the literature study from scientific publications and data from the BPS. The results of this research showed: (i) an inquiry to the conditions of geographical, economic, social cultural in Ketapang village which supports the development of organic agriculture; (ii) that agricultural land, nature, society, and science and technology are major problems in the development of organic farming; (iii) that social capital comes in the form of values, norms, beliefs, and social networks which play important role in overcoming problems of agricultural land, nature, society, and science and technology in the development of organic agriculture; and (iv) that institutional economies of organic farming based on social capital in Ketapang Village is based on four important points, which are the stakeholders, institutional aspects in developing Organic Agriculture (formal and informal rules), development of social capital based organic agriculture, and the goals to be achieved (economic, social, and environmental).
