Abstract
Pre-diabetes is a temporary condition which can develop in someone and increases his risks for type 2 diabetes. Pre-diabetes includes Impaired Fasting Glucose (IFG) and/or Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT). In Indonesia, the risk factors for pre-diabetes have not been popular. This study aimed to determine the risk factors for pre-diabetes in individuals in Tegal city, and used an analytic observational design with a cross sectional approach. A quota sampling was carried out on the individuals in 8 health centers in Tegal and resulted in 170 respondents. The data were collected using questionnaires as well as a measurement/examination of Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT), blood pressure, waist circumference, and body mass index. The collected data were then analyzed using univariate, bivariate (simple logistic regression) and multivariate analyses (multiple logistic regression). The results indicated the proportion of pre-diabetes in Tegal was 16.5%. The average level of fasting plasma glucose was 91.96 mg/dL and 2 hours post load plasma glucose was 156.25 mg/dL. Most individuals with pre-diabetes were of age 36-45 years, females, had no family history of diabetes, obesity, and central obesity. There was a significant relationship between the age, hypertension, obesity, central obesity, physical activities and pre-diabetes occurrence. The multivariate analysis showed that the predictive factors of pre-diabetes were the moderate level of physical activity (p=0.022, OR=7.437, 95% CI 1.343-41.175), age of 56-65 years (p=0.045, OR=6.202, 95% CI 1.042-36.933) and hypertension (p=0.012, OR=4.053, 95% CI 1.353-12.137). The study concluded that the age, hypertension, obesity, central obesity and physical activity were associated with the incidence of pre-diabetes. The moderate level of physical activity had the most influence on the risk factors for pre-diabetes. Keywords: Pre-diabetes, IGT, IFG, Risk factors
