Abstract

Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is known as skin to skin contact is recommended treatment method performed on Low Birth Weight (LBW). This method keeps the baby warm, increases breastfeeding, makes babies sleep better, creates bonding and attachment between mother and baby, and increase mother’s confidence. Kangaroo method is appropriately by the mother, so it needs a good knowledge from the mother to be able apply the KMC. The purpose of this research was to determine the description of mothers' knowledge about KMC on LBW in Semarang. The research design was a descriptive survey, sample was taken by convenience sampling technique that met the inclusion criteria. Respondents of the research were mothers of LBW infants who had received education related to KMC from nurse with total 59 respondents. Data were collected using a questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability by using Kuder Richardson (K-R 20) showed that reliability coefficient of 0.935. The results of the demographic characteristics of the respondents indicated the majority of the early adulthood (61%), high school educated (54.2%), mothers didn’t work (52.5%), and has no experience caring for LBW (71.2%).While the results of the level of knowledge showed as much as 35 respondents (59.3%) had poor knowledge about KMC and in the domain understanding (78%), benefits (71.2%), and the implementation of the KMC (54.2%). Based on the results, the relevant instance to revise the related educational system for KMC, for example by give the pre and post test mother’s knowledge, more structured education and follow-up after being by given leaflet or poster.
