Abstract

Psychological problems that often arise in the elderly are loneliness. Elderly who live in elderly care unit have higher levels of loneliness than the elderly who live with their families. Self-adjustment of elderly is differents one to others because of the various stressor, it was made the coping mechanisms of each individual was different. This study aims to determine the relationship between levels of loneliness with coping mechanisms of the elderly in Elderly Care Unit "Wening Wardoyo" Ungaran. This research using quantitative non-experimental method with cross sectional approach, and using third Version UCLA Loneliness Scale questionnaires and the Brief Cope. This study used total sampling technique. The samples in this study were 66 elderly who live in Elderly Care Unit "Wening Wardoyo" Ungaran. Bivariate analysis performed by the Spearman Rank test. The results of this study showed that 26 respondents (39,4%) had mild levels of loneliness. Emotion focused coping was the type of coping mecanism that 46 respondents (69,7%) used to. Analisys results showing that there was no relationship between the level of loneliness with coping mechanisms in the elderly with p-value 0.076 and α = 0.05. Elderly suggested to more enthusiastically followed the activities held by the elderly care unit, so the elderly will not only stayed in their room. Further researchers is suggested to examine other factors that cause loneliness in the elderly.
