Abstract

Background : Lipid profile is not only associated with the eldery, but also adolescents. Examining lipid profile could be done with measuring neck circumferece and skinfold. Aims : To analyze the correlation between neck circumference, skinfold and lipid profile in adolescents. Methods : An observational study conducted with cross-sectional design. Subjects were 16 to 18 year-old students in SMA Negeri 9 Semarang and were selected consecutively. Sixty one adolescents met the inclusion criteria and agreed to participate. Data analysis using Pearson Product Moment, Rank Spearman, Mann-Whiteney and Kruskal-Wallis were performed. Results : There was no correlation between neck circumference and total cholesterol (p=0,633 ; r=0,62), triglicerydes (p=0,307 ; r=0,133), LDL (p=0,411; r=0,107) and HDL (p=0,091 ; r= -0,219). Skinfold converted into body fat percentage showed weak correlation with total cholesterol (p=0,037 ; r=0,268), LDL (p=0,037 ; r=0,268) and HDL (p=0,047 ; r= -0,256). Body fat percentage showed no significant correlation with triglycerides (p=0,269; r=0,144). Conclusion : There was no correlation between neck circumference and lipid profile in adolescents. In contrast, there was correlation between skinfold and lipid profile (total cholesterol, LDL and HDL) in adolescent. Key Words: neck circumference, skinfold, lipid profile, adolescent
