Abstract
Background : Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted disease of whose prevalence is increasing in many countries. The recommended first line treatment for treating gonorrhoeae is ceftriaxone. The high rate resistance of ceftriaxone has been reported. Ciprofloxacin is one of the alternatives that can be used to treat gonorrhoea. Purpose : To assess the difference of efficacy between ciprofloxacine and ceftriaxone towards Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria Methods : This research uses a cross sectional design. Fifty-nine samples were collected from patients with positive endocervical purulent body discharge. These samples were stained with Gram stain and the resulted were Gram negative diplococci. Twenty nine samples that meet the inclusion criteria were cultured in the Thayer Martin media and incubated at 37 degrees celcius for 48 hours. After the colonies were grown, these samples were tested with definitive tests such as oxidation test and glucose fermentation test. After 26 samples were declared Neisseria gonorrhoeae positive, the colonies on Thayer Martin media were cultured in the Mueller Hinton media for sensitivity test. After 24 hours of incubation, inhibition zones were formed and were measured. Results : Seventeen (65,4%) samples were ciprofloxacin sensitive whereas the other nine (34,6%) samples were ciprofloxacin resistant. Ceftriaxone were shown to be resistant on the 20 (76,9%) samples and only 6 (23,1%) samples were sensitive Conclusions : Neisseria gonorrhoeae susceptibility to ciprofloxacin better than ceftriaxone and ciprofloxacin may be recommended as first line treatment of gonorrhea in Semarang. Keywords : Neisseria gonorrhoeae, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, efficacy
