Abstract

Background : Systemic Lupus Erythematosus is a chronic multisystem autoimmune inflammatory disease that causes various clinical manifestations and prognosis. Poor sleep quality has been reported in most SLE patients. Some of the factors that lead to sleep disorders and poor sleep quality in SLE patients are such as disease activity, pain, functional disability and depression. Objective : To analyze the correlation between SLE disease activity level and sleep quality in SLE patients. Methods : This research was an analytical observation with cross sectional approach. Samples included 30 SLE patients treated at dr. Kariadi Hospital Semarang. The data used were primary data obtained from Mexican Erythematosus Systemic Lupus Disease Activity (MEX-SLEDAI) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaires, and secondary data obtained through medical records of SLE patients. Analysis of the correlation was done by using Spearman correlation test. Results : 9 SLE patients with mild disease activity level had good sleep quality. 15 of 20 SLE patients with moderate disease activity level had poor sleep quality. There was a strong significant positive correlation between the level of disease activity with the quality of sleep in SLE patients (p <0.05). Sleep latency and sleep disturbances were the component of sleep quality that had a significant correlation (p<0,05) with SLE disease activity level. Conclusions : There was strong significant positive correlation between the level of disease activity with the quality of sleep in SLE patients, which means the more severe level of disease activity the worse SLE patient's sleep quality. Keywords : Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, disease activity level, MEX-SLEDAI, sleep quality, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).
