Abstract

Background: Malondialdehyde (MDA) is one of free radical markers from the body. Free radicals are molecules which are formed by oxidative damage. Cigarette smoke exposure is one of the source of free radicals. Antioxidants are known as compound that is able to quell with oxidative damage came from the inside and outside of body. Black cumin (Nigella sativa) is a medicinal plant that has a potential as antioxidant. Administration of Nigella sativa is expected to decrease the MDA level. Purpose: To determine the effect of Nigella sativa extract administration on MDA level after cigarette smoke exposure. Method: True experimental posttest only control group design. Samples were 18 male Sprague Dawley rats which fulfilled the criteria, which were randomized into 3 groups; group K1 was negative control group; group K2 was exposed to cigarette smoke from 4 cigarettes/day; group P was exposed to cigarette smoke from 4 cigarettes/day and given Nigella sativa extract 500mg/day. After 28 days of research, blood test on samples were done in 29th day to check their MDA levels. The data were analyzed with Kruskal Wallis test. Result: The mean of MDA serum level: group K1 was 0,99 ± 0,56 μmol/L; group K2 was 2,28 ± 1,88 μmol/L; group P was 1,14 ± 0,74 μmol/L. The Kruskal Wallis test found no significant difference between groups (p > 0,05). Conclusion: Nigella sativa extract decreased the MDA serum level of Sprague Dawley rats exposed by cigarette smoke insignificantly. Key Word: Black cumin (Nigella sativa), MDA serum, cigarette smoke
