Abstract
Background: Obstructive Sleep Apne Syndrome (OSAS) is highly prevalent in stroke population, about 4-6 times greater than general population. OSAS in ischemic stroke patients increases risk of recurrency, neurological worsening ,longer hospital stays, and mortality. Aim: To know the factors that associated with OSAS in ischemic stroke patients. Methods: An observational study with case-control design. Ischemic stroke outpatients in Kariadi Hospital Semarang were classified as OSAS and Non OSAS according to the result of Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) questionnaire then some physical examinations were being done. Datas were analyzed statistically by chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, and regression logistic test. Result: Fifteen patients had OSAS and twenty-six patients performed control group. Sex (p=0,033), neck circumference (p=0,043), and Mallampati score (p=0,017) were significantly associated with OSAS in ischemic stroke patients. There was no significant association between age, Body Mass Index (BMI), nasal turbinate hypertrophy and nasal septum deviaton with OSAS. Sex and Malampati score were shown to be independently associated with OSAS in ischemic stroke patients. Sex was the most dominant factor that independently associated with OSAS in stroke ischemic patients ( OR = 14,827 IK 95% 1,422-154,571). Conclusion: Sex, neck circumference and Mallampati score were significantly associated with OSAS in ischemic stroke patients. Sex and Mallampati score were shown to be independently associated with OSAS in ischemic stroke patients. Male ischaemc stroke patients had 14,827 times greater risk to have OSAS than female. Keywords: Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome, stroke, Epworth Sleepiness Scale.
