Abstract

Background : Diabetic retinopathy is a severe complication of diabetes and the leading cause of visual impartment, such as color vision. Treatment effect of panretinal photocoagulation (PRP), which is reduce progresivity of proliferative diabetic retinopathy can also cause celluler destruction of the outer retina, including the outer photoreceptors and retinal pigment epitelium. Cone cells in the photoreceptors layer are responsible for the color vision. Thus, PRP also affect changes in color vision person. Aim : To analyze the difference of color blindness score in patients with diabetic retinopathy before and after laser PRP treatment. Methods : This study was a quasi experimental using one group pretest and posttest design. The sampling method was using consecutive sampling. Score of color blindness was measured by Farnsworth Munsell 28 Hue test before the treatment laser and a week after laser PRP. Obtained data were analyzed using Paired T Test. Results : The entire 21 eyes case that has been examined, the color blindness score of proliferative diabetic retinopathy patient before and after PRP laser treatment has the average of 713,29±216,314 and 819±184,923, which explains shifting into a massive color blindness score. It has also significant inequality of color blindness score before and after laser PRP treatment (p=0,018). Conclusion : There is increasing of color blindness score in patients with diabetic retinopathy before and after laser PRP treatment. Keywords : diabetic retinopathy, color vision, PRP
