Abstract
Background: The mosquito coil is the main choice for preventing mosquito bites in Indonesia, it can damage various organs including the testes. White pitaya peels wich rich of antioxidant more than its fruit is expected to act as testes damage prevention. Aim: To determine the influence of white pitaya peels (Hylocereus undatus) on microscopic testes of the Balb/c mice exposed by mosquito coil smoke. Methods: True experimental post-test only control group design. The sample were 25 Balb/c mice, randomized into 5 groups :a gorup without any treatment (K1); a group was given mosquito coil smoke exposure 8 hrs/day (K2); groups were given mosquito coil smoke exposure 8 hrs/day and white pitaya peels extract with respectively doses 7,5 mg/ml (P1), 15 mg/ml (P2), and 30 mg/ml (P3). The research was done for 21 days. Then calculate the number of cell spermatogonia, primary spermatocytes, and spermatids. Results: Obtained from the study, there was significant difference of the number of spermatogonia between treatment gorup (P2 and P3) and K2 group. Obtained a significant difference of the number of primary spermatocytes in treatment group(P1,P2,P3) compared to K2 group. The number of spermatids also got a meaningful on the treatment (P1, P2, P3) than K2 group. Conclusion: The white pitaya peel extract at dose 7.5 mg / ml; 15 mg / ml; and 30 mg / ml increase the number of cell spermatogonia, primary spermatocytes, and spermatids in the testes of mice Balb / c by exposure to smoke mosquito coil. The most effective dose is 30 mg / ml. Keywords: white pitaya peel extract, mosquito coils, microscopic testicular
