Abstract

Background: Chronic hyperglycemia increases the risk of microvascular complications in diabetes mellitus patien. One of them is diabetic retinopathy. Diabetes mellitus patients, especially patients with diabetic retinopathy complication tend to suffer from dry eye, and tend to become heavy on the degree of diabetic retinopathy is more severe. Dry eye describes a tear deficiency states both in quality and quantity. Seeing the importance of the role of tears to maintain and protect the surface of the eyeball, dry eye is certainly closely related to the adverse effects that occurred in several public activities and the importance of daily life, which conditions are important to engage as a public health problem that needs to be concerned. Objective: This study aims to prove the existence of differences in measurement results Schirmer test in patients with NPDR and PDR. Methods: 78 DM patients with diabetic retinopathy complication in eye center of Dr.kariadi semarang hospital which consisted of 39 NPDR patients and 39 PDR patients were consecutively selected from March to May 2016. All the subjects was assessed with the Schirmer test to measure the tear production. The collected data were analyzed by Mann Whitney test. Results: Of 78 subjects, 42 patients (17 NPDR and PDR 25) diagnosed with dry eye, while 36 patients (22 NPDR and 14 PDR) were normal tear production. There were significant difference between the results of measurements of Schirmer test in NPDR patients and PDR patients (p=0,029). Conclusions: There were significant difference between the results of measurements of Schirmer test in NPDR patients and PDR patients. Keywords: NPDR, PDR, Dry eye, Schirmer test
