Abstract

Background: The higher life expectancy of a country led to higher number of elderly that is also followed by higher existing health problems in elderly, one of which is sleep disorder. More than half of the elderly population often complain of sleep disturbances at night. Elderly gymnastics is one example of physical activity recommended by WHO to be undertaken by the elderly to improve sleep quality. These are some types of elderly gymnastics that is often done by Indonesian: Menpora erlderly Gymnastic, SKJ erderly Gymnastics, Elderly Tera Gymnastics and Osteoporosis gymnastic Objective: To compare the sleep quality of elderly who regularly do gymnastics elderly and the sleep quality of elderly who do not routinely do gymnastics elderly Methods: The type of research is an analytical observational study with cross sectional design. Samples were 36 members of Nangka elderly people citizen (WULANA) that meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria selected by purposive sampling. Sleep quality is measured using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire. Data distribution normality was tested with Shapiro-Wilk test. Hypothesis test using the Mann-Whitney test to compare sleep quality of the group who were routine and non-routine do gymnastics elderly. The difference is expressed significant if p <0.05 Results: The mean value of sleep quality in older people who regularly follow gymnastics elderly was 2.78 ± 0.88, while the average value of the quality of sleep in older people who do not routinely follow gymnastics elderly was 6.00 ± 2.70. Statistical analysis showed that the difference was significant (p = 0.000) Conclusion: The average sleep quality in those who regularly do gymnastics elderly better than the group who did not routinely perform gymnastics elderly significanly.
