Abstract

Background: Excessive exercise could cause menstrual cycle disorders. The number of women who participated in sports and physical activity continued to increase. Although exercise had many advantages, but exercise could also cause some disorders. Heavy physical exercise could cause interference on the physiology of the menstrual cycle. Objective: To examine the effect of exercise on the menstrual cycle regularity student of the Faculty of Sport Science, State University of Semarang 2016. Methods: This study was observational with cross sectional design. A total of 80 students of FIK UNNES that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria from February 2016 until March 2016 had been filling out questionnaires. Exercise type, frequency, duration, and menstrual cycle data was obtained through interviews with a questionnaire designed specifically for this study. The data described in the form of tables and figures, Mann Whitney test was used, analysis of data using computer programs Results: A total of 62 samples (77.5%) of the 80 samples of students never experienced menstrual cycle irregularity. This study had value of P <0.05 or significant correlation at frequency and duration of exercise variables with the menstrual cycle on the students of FIK UNNES. Differences in the incidence of irregular menstruation distribution by type of exercise was not significant (p = 0.1). Conclusion: There was significant correlation between the frequency and duration of exercise with the menstrual cycle on the students of FIK UNNES.
