Abstract

Background : Heart failure is a clinical syndrome with symptoms and signs indicating heart dysfunction at rest caused by structural or functional abnormalities that causes the heart to pump insufficient blood to meet body tissue’s metabolism demand. Chronic heart failure may be further subdivided into systolic heart failure and diastolic heart failure. As a chronic disease, heart failure may have an impact on patient’s quality of life. There are studies with conflicting results regarding the relation between systolic function and quality of life in patients with chronic heart failure. Objective : To discover the relation between systolic function and quality of life in patients with chronic heart failure. Methods : This study is an analytical observation study using cross sectional methods. Sample of 32 patients with chronic heart failure who meet inclusion criteria using consecutive sampling method. Ejection fraction values obtained from the results of echocardiography and quality of life assessment using MLHFQ. Results : The results of correlation test between LVEF and physical dimension, emotional dimension and overall score from MLHFQ do not show significant correlation (p > 0,05). The correlation between LVEF and physical dimension and between LVEF and overall score of MLHFQ show negative weak degree correlations (> - 0,2). The correlation between LVEF and emotional dimension shows positive weak degree correlation (< 0,2). Conclusion : There is no significant correlation between systolic function and physical, emotional and overall quality of life in patients with chronic heart failure. Keyword : Chronic heart failure, systolic function, ejection fraction, quality of life
