Abstract

Background: Cigarette smoking contains free radical compound which could be associated with decreased amount of spermatozoa. Dark chocolate contains flavonoid as antioxidant which could reduce free radical chains damage effects Objective: To observe the effect of dark chocolate to the sperm count of male Balb/c mice with exposure of cigarette smoke. Method: This experimental research used the post test only control group design. The sample were 40 male Balb/c mice which is divided into 5 group. Group K(-) was given standard meals only. Group K(+) was exposed to cigarette smoke only. Group P1 was exposed to cigarette smoke and 0,05 gram of dark chocolate each day. Group P2 was exposed to cigarette smoke and 0,1 gram of dark chocolate each day. Group P3 was exposed to cigarette smoke and 0,2 gram of dark chocolate each day. This experiment lasted for 28 days. On the 29th day, every mice were terminated and the sperm count was examined. Results: Mean score of sperm count are: Group K(-)=22,9; Group K(+)=4; Group P1=11,5; Group P2=19,6; Group P3=20,6. There was significant difference in sperm count between groups that showed in Oneway ANOVA test and also significant differences between all group except K(-) and P2, K(-) and P3, P2 and P3 in Post Hoc test Conclusions: Dark chocolate with dose of 0,05 gram each day for 28 days gives significant effect in increasing sperm count of Balb/c mice which is exposed by cigarette smoke.
