Abstract

ABSTRACT The research was done for six months to determine the in vivo fiber digestibility of ammoniated and fermented sugarcane top in the form of water and pellet. It was also aimed to determine its influence on the ruminal fermentation pattern of the cattle. The sugarcane top used came from sugarcane plantation of PTP XV-XVI. Nine heads of local male cattle own by Faculty of Animal Science UNDIP were used. Urea was used as source of ammonia and a mixed microbe culture was used for fermentation process. The nine heads of those cattle was divided into three treatments groups, each consist of 3 heads as replication. The treatment for each groups were as follow : T0 (fresh sugarcane top); T1 (ammoniated and fermented sugarcane top in pellet form feeding) and T2 (ammoniated and fermented sugarcane top in wafer from feeding). The amoniation was done using 6% ammonia for three weeks followed by 2 weeks fermentation using 5/1000 of inoculant from the dry matter of sugarcane top. The variables measured as follows : the percentages and digestibility of NDF and ADF cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin. The concentration of acetic acid and butiric acid. The obtained data were analyzed statistically using Completelly Randomized Design (CRD). The result showed that the digestibility of NDF and ADF treated sugarcane top (T1 and T2) were higher than fresh sugarcane top (T0), namely : 67.51 and 65.19; 66.89 and 63.60 vs 63.56 and 61.44 % respectively. On the other hand the cellulose and hemicelluloses digestibility of treated sugarcane top were higher than fresh sugarcane top (73.58 and 80.73; 71.88 and 75.09 vs 70.99 and 67.77 %). Ruminal acetic acid concentration in group 1 were higher (p<0.01) than the other group (41.66 vs 39.97 and 40.02 mM). Ruminal propionic acid concentration in T1 was higher than T0 and T2 (13.14 vs 12.59 and 13.4 mM), while the ruminal butiric acid concentration in T2 was lower than T0 and T1 (4.42 vs 5.37 and 5.43 mM).
