Abstract

Spatial inequality is caused by the presence of economic activities especially industrial concentration, where this industry is regarded as the leading sector in order to boost the economy. The existence of differences in some of the earlier research about the factors that influence the spatial inequality makes it interesting to be researched. The purpose of this research is to analyze the condition of the spatial concentration of industry and spatial inequality in Java Island, and analyze the factors that influence the spatial inequality in Java Island by selecting one of the province as the basis for comparison. Analysis of the industry spatial concentration conditions is carried out using the Glaeser-Ellison Index and the Hoover-Balassa Index. The data used is number of large and medium scale industrial workforce and two-digits code ISIC 2005 and 2009 level of municipality in Java 2001 until 2013. The results of the analysis show that the large and medium scale industry is most concentrated on tobacco processing industry and industry that spread randomly is rubber industry, plastic and rubber goods. Analysis of factors that influence the spatial inequality in Java Island is done with panel data analysis. The data used is a combination of time series data from 2002 to 2013 and cross section dataare 6 provinces which DIY became a base province of comparison. Panel data regression model used is the Fixed Effect Model (FEM)/Least Square Dummy Variable (LSDV). The results of this study found that the variables which are not significantlyaffect spatial inequality in Java Islandare the industry spatial concentration, foreign direct investment, domestic direct investment, the length of road, and government spending. While the human development index variable has significant influence to spatial inequality in Java Island.
