Abstract

This thesis is ethnography of communication study which analyzes a communicative event namely modeling symbol on the ngeuyeuk seureuh ceremony. The aims of study are to describe the components of communication in the event and to explain the relationship among the components. In collecting the data, the researcher conducted participant observation and interviews. Theory of communicative components (Hymes, 1974 and Saville-Troike, 2003) is used to analyze the data. The result of communicative component analysis entails ethnographic description which consists of genre, setting, participants, end, key, instrumentalities, norms and act sequences. Each component has relationship with the other components. The event of modeling symbols is an oral tradition which has purposes to give lessons and advices for the prospective bridal couple. The participants conducted face-to-face interaction according to the rule of interaction of the event and the purpose of the event. All of the communicative components reflect the local wisdom which relate to the sociocultural rules of the speech community such as the way of the community in transferring values through modeling symbols and the meaning contained in every modeling symbols.
