Abstract

Cervical cancer patients experience many problems in every aspect of their life. Their quality of life may decrease, unless they get adequate spiritual support from their nurses and family. The purpose of this study was to know the patients’ perception on the spiritual support given from oncology nurses and patients’ family. This research was conducted in January 2016 at oncology ward, Dr. Moewardi Hospital, Central Java Province. Cervical cancer patients who were newly diagnosed or in recurrence , had received at least one cancer therapy at the hospital were recruited. Two newly developed questionnaires: spiritual support from nurses and patients’ family were used to collect the data. There were 93 cervical cancer patients involved in this study. Only approximately half of the respondents (n = 51, 54.8%) reported that they had received good spiritual support from the nurses. Among this support, therapeutic communication and motivational support from the nurses scored the highest (97.8% and 87.1%, respectively). Moreover, majority of the respondents (n=77, 82.8%) informed that they had obtained good spiritual support from their family. Motivational support, religious activity support, improvement of spiritual support system and patients’ inner strength, scored high. More nurses should increase their capacity to give spiritual support for patients with cervical cancer. Keywords: spiritual support, nurse and family, cervical cancer
