VARIASI DAN FUNGSI BAHASA DALAM RIAK PADAMASYARAKAT MA’ANYAN (KAJIAN ETNOGRAFI KOMUNIKASI

Abstract

ABSTRACT This is an ethnography of communication research about language use in riak in traditional wedding ceremony of Ma’anyan community. This research was conducted in Eastern Barito district, Central Borneo. The purposesof thisresearchwereto describe the language variety and the language function, and to interpret the cultural meaning which has been used in riak by Wadian Kesenian in traditional wedding ceremony of Ma’anyan community. The result indicates that the variety of language in traditional wedding ceremony of Ma’anyan community has special lexical, morphological, and syntactical characteristics. The different features of expression are seen through the use of language existing in daily communication and cultural tradition activities. In terms of its function, riak has informative, interactive, and imaginative functions with each particular subfunctions. In terms of its meaning, riak has meaning of duties and responsibilities of Wadian Kesenian in Ma’anyan wedding ceremony, meaning of togetherness, meaning of jokes, and meaning of showing identity.
