Abstract

ABSTRACT MAGHFIROH. NURUL. A4C009013. Improving Students’ Reading Competence Through Styles and Strategies Based Instruction (SSBI): A Classroom Action Research at Alumni Class of Ganesha Operation Semarang 2010-2011 Academic Year. The advisor, Prof. Dr. H. Joko Nurkamto, M.Pd. Thesis. Semarang. English Department, Postgraduate Program, Diponegoro University, 2011. This research is aimed to know (1) whether students’ reading competence at Alumni Class of Ganesha Operation Semarang 2010-2011 academic year be improved through Styles and Strategies Based Instruction. (2) how is students’ response when Styles and Strategies Based Instruction is conducted at Alumni Class of Ganesha Operation Semarang 2010-2011 academic year. (3) the problems arise when Styles and Strategies Based Instruction are conducted at Alumni Class of Ganesha Operation Semarang 2010-2011 academic year. The research was carried out from October 2010 to August 2011. The subject of the research was students at Alumni Class of Ganesha Operation Semarang 2010-2011 academic year consisting of 15 students, 8 males and 7 females. This research was a classroom action research, therefore researcher did spiraling steps in each cycle. These were planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. In collecting the data, researcher used classroom observation, field notes, interviews, and test. The quantitative data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, while the qualitative data were analyzed by using constant comparative method. The research findings showed that students reading competence can be improved through the implementation of Styles and Strategies Based Instruction, (1) empirically, students’ reading scores improved and the whole students reached the standard minimum required. (2) psychologically, students’ behavior, enthusiasm, motivation, and thinking related to reading shifted; (a) students did not think that reading was a complicated, boring, and monotonous subject anymore. (b) students were eager and motivated in studying reading both in classroom reading performance and additional meeting outside the class. (3) emotionally, teacher-students’ relationship became closer. (4) classroom reading performance became more active, lively, enjoyable, and comfortable. The result showed that students’ reading competence improved. Therefore, it is recommended that (1) students must be able to develop their English skill through certain strategies which are fitted to their own learning style because successful learning comes from students’ self-motivation. (2) every teacher is hopefully to be sensitive in their students’ competence and classroom performance, and be active in making improvement on their ability in teaching; (3) the informal institution called Ganesha Operation should encourage its teachers to implement certain strategies during teaching learning process based on students’ learning styles. (4) the next researcher should be more active to do certain research concerning with their students’ competence and pay more attention to students’ problems raising during classroom activity.
