Thesis: Applied Linguistics in English, Postgraduate Program of Diponegoro University Semarang. 2011. This research is aimed to find out whether the students involve and respond the reading texts when the teacher uses inquiry-based strategies and whether the use of inquiry-based strategies improves the tenth graders’ reading competence at SMA Negeri 1 Brebes in academic year 2010/2011. The method used to solve the problem was a classroom action research employed in three cycles. There were four steps in every cycle, namely: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. Inquiry-based strategies were used to improve the students’ reading competence. The strategies consisted of inquiry-based teaching strategy for teachers and inquiry-based learning strategy for students. The data collecting and analysis techniques were qualitative (observation, questionnaire, interview, and constant comparative method) and quantitative (descriptive statistics). Before conducting the research, the students’ reading competence problems had to be identified based on the researcher’s observation during classroom activities. The problems were (1) having limited number of vocabulary, (2) possessing less willingness to read, (3) not getting used to reading, (4) being confused to understand the content of the texts, and (5) having difficulty to respond questions based on what stated in the text. An English pre-test on recount was enrolled at seven classes of tenth grade in the month of July 2010. The result was that the students of Class X-1 with 13 male and 22 female students performed only 12 of 35 students or 32.43% passed the passing grade or KKM 70 with the score average of 61.63. Compared with other classes, the result was the least. The reading competence dealt with the indicators to identify and to respond rhetoric steps of every text/genre. The research was conducted from July to November 2010 or during Semester One. At the end, the research showed that the students were willing to involve and to respond the reading materials. They became more active to explore and elaborate the content of the texts using inquiry-based strategies. As a consequence, the average of Test 1 on recount in Cycle One was 68.43; Test 2 on narrative in Cycle Two was 69.94; and Test 3 on procedure in Cycle Three was 79.54. The result proves that the students’ reading competence get improved after the researcher used inquiry-based strategies. The research showed that the improvement is not only for the students’ reading competence but also their behaviour to involve and to respond the text during the class. Therefore, this research is recommended as reference for those who have involved in teaching learning activities, such as: teachers, students, and future researchers. INTISARI Rini, Leksito. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah siswa terlibat dan menanggapi teks bacaan ketika guru menggunakan strategi berbasis inquiry dan untuk mengetahui apakah penggunaan strategi berbasis inquiry dapat meningkatkan kompetensi membaca peserta didik di kelas X SMA Negeri 1 Brebes pada tahun ajaran 2010/2011. Metode yang dugunakan untuk menyelesaikan masalah adalah penelitian tindakan kelas yang diterapkan dalam tiga siklus. Ada empat langkah dalam tiap siklusnya, yakni: perencanaan, tindakan, pengamatan, dan perenungan. Strategi berbasis inquiry digunakan untuk meningkatkan kompetensi membaca peserta didik. Strategi tersebut dibagi dua, yakni strategi pengajaran berbasis inquiry untuk guru dan strategi pembelajaran berbasis inquiry untuk siswa. Teknik dan analisa olah data menggunakan tenik kualitatif (pengamatan, angket, wawancara, dan metode komparatif konstan) dan kuantitatif (statisitik deskriptif). Sebelum melaksanakan penelitian, permasalahan membaca yang dihadapi peserta didik diidentifikasikan berdasarkan pengamatan. Permasalahannya adalah peserta didik (1) memiliki keterbatasan kosakata, (2) minat baca rendah, (3) tidak terbiasa membaca, (4) kurang memahami isi teks, dan (5) kesulitan merespon pertanyaan berdasarkan teks. Sebuah tes awal berupa teks recount berbahasa Inggris ditujukan bagi peserta didik kelas X di tujuh kelas pada bulan Juli 2010. Hasilnya adalah peserta didik Kelas X-1 yang terdiri dari 13 peserta didik laki-laki dan 22 perempuan menunjukkan hanya 12 dari 35 atau 32,43% dari peserta didik kelas tersebut yang tuntas pada KKM 70 dengan rerata kelas 61,63. Dibandingkan dengan kelas-kelas lainnya, hasil yang diperoleh kelas tersebut merupakan yang terendah. Kompetensi membaca berkaitan dengan beberapa indikator mengidentifikasi dan merespon langkah-langkah retorika dari setiap jenis teks/genre. Penelitian dilaksanakan dari bulan Juli sampai dengan November 2010 atau selama Semester Gasal. Akhir penelitian menunjukkan bahwa peserta didik dan merespon materi bacaan. Mereka menjadi aktif mengeksplorasi dan mengelaborasi isi teks menggunakan strategi berbasis inquiry. Dibuktikan secara statistik bahwa rerata Tes 1 tentang recount pada Siklus 1 adalah 68,43; Tes 2 tentang narrative pada Siklus 2 adalah 69,94; dan Tes 3 tentang procedure pada Siklus 3 adalah 79,54. Hasil tersebut membuktikan bahwa kompetensi membaca membaik setelah peneliti menggunakan strategi berbasis inquiry. Penelitian tersebut menunjukkan bahwa perbaikan tidak hanya pada kompetensi membaca peserta didik tetapi juga sikap mereka untuk terlibat dan merespon teks selama proses kegiatan belajar mengajar (KBM). Penelitian ini dapat direkomendasikan sebagai referesi bagi mereka yang terlibat dalam KBM, seperti: para guru, peserta didik, dan peneliti di masa depan.
